It doesn’t matter if it’s a bright sunny afternoon or a dark gloomy morning. Or if everything’s going gangbusters in my life. That pesky depression oozed under the door and snuck in when I least expected it.

I haven’t posted for a while as I’ve been busy getting a new project off the ground. I’ll tell you more about that soon but suffice to say that I’ve been happy and productive. Until late last week.

Suddenly things took a nosedive. People that had made promises didn’t keep them. Potential resources were grumpy (give them the benefit of the doubt here) and shut me down. The dark stuff just seemed to keep piling on. And as I continued to take it all in, I was mystified as to how it all suddenly happened. Clusters of non-workability and grumpiness / not great feelings kept layering up. What the heck???

As i watched my productivity tank, so too did my energy. I suddenly began feeling lethargic, run down, very low energy. I needed to rest several times a day – a holdover from last year’s long illness (another story for another time). I just couldn’t seem to get going. Until today, when it hit me: IT’S DEPRESSION SHOWING UP1!

it amazes me that it took me days to recognize the symptoms. I guess that’s because it’s been a while since they had. They weren’t as obvious to me as they used to be. But boy let me tell you i see them now!

So what can i do about it? First of all, I can STOP LETTING THEM RUN THE SHOW! I have circumstances, they don’t have ME. And living form THAT gives me some freedom – gives me a bit of a break from the hold of the stuff.

I’ve said before – especially in my book You Aren’t Depression’s Victim – that we have a choice as to whether we react or respond to the dark or sad or tough stuff in our lives. And I live by that. But like you, I forget sometimes. And then i remember and things change – not the circumstances (they stay the same). But I CHANGE; my perspective changes. And THAT makes all the difference, doesn’t it? When we can shift our perspective about the “stuff”, it no longer has a hold over us. We regain our freedom and our sense of balance.

So if things aren’t going your way and you find yourself, like I did, slowing down, feeling “off”, check your perspective. Things happen in life; that’s a given. It’s what we do with all that that matters. So if you cant change the circumstances, change your viewpoint. And watch what happens!
